Asana & Longevity: A Katonah Yoga Workshop

May 11 | 2-4:30| $35

No mater how many years young we are it is important to recognize the impermanent reality of the body, and that, as we go through life, change is inevitable. This is the beauty of an asana practice. And the time we carve out for our practice gives us the opportunity to explore the inner landscape of our physicality and the subtle beauty of change.

In this workshop will explore our sacred structure, using simple angles and geometry to create an objective framework for our asana practice. This framework will allow us to see our embodied habits and personal narratives in a way that gives us important information and feedback. In each installment of this workshop, traditional asanas will be explored with new techniques and tools that you can take with you to implement in a healthy, sustainable, and joyful practice that you can keep for life.

Form Function & Flow: Katonah Yoga & Vinyasa

May 30 | 6-7:30p | $30
The literal translation of Vinyasa means to place in a special way. We interpret this to mean that the order of forms, or asanas, function in a way that flows. This placement is not arbitrary, and true flow can occur when things fit together and function well. Katonah Yoga gives us the tools and techniques to explore the forms in an inFORMative way that offer insights into both the objective pattern of nature and the subjective pattern of our personal narrative.

In this workshop, we will explore how the geometric integrity and theory of Katonah yoga functions to create flow in a well-adjusted and informed Vinyasa experience. Open to both teachers who wish to incorporate more of the material in their classes and any student who is curious to explore these connections more.

Open to teachers and curious students familiar with any lineage or background.

25 hour Katonah Yoga Adjustments Training

Touch can be a powerful and effective tool when it is warranted and consented to. We are three dimensional beings, each with our own understanding of our body and the world around us. Developing an eye for embodiment is a big piece of the picture when approaching and applying any hands-on technique. In this training, we will spend a good deal of time exploring what and how we see, so that we can approach adjustments (or assists) with care, caution, humility, grace. Hands-on adjustments are neither arbitrary or mandatory, but rather an opportunity to offer a shift in perspective and a possible pathway to insight.

This training is designed for yoga teachers who wish to implement a sound and sensible approach to hands-on adjustments in both group and private class settings. You will learn how to use Katonah Yoga theory, tools, and techniques to explore effective ways to guide your classes visually, spatially, and verbally. We will explore geometry, asana archetypes, accessible alignment, and adjustment techniques in an in-depth and pragmatic way, leaving you with a tool box of skills to use to your advantage in life and in teaching.

  • Introduction to the Theory and Practices of Katonah Yoga

  • Body Reading for Asana

  • Adjustments/assists for common Asanas in Vinyasa Classes

  • Adjustments for private clients

  • Boundaries, Consent & Injuries

10 Hour Intensive Training Chairs

@The Studio

Saturday & Sunday, July 20-21st (2-7pm)
Price: $300 ($250 before July 15th)

A real game in yoga (and in life) is to learn how to make effortless efforts. The trick of this game is figuring out just the right amount of effort to put into our work, because with too little we become idle and with too much, we can experience burn-out. When we use props in our yoga practice, we are supported by scaffolding, allowing our efforts to be attuned towards the real interior work: organizing the space of the body well, so that time is on our side and we get to our destination without breaking down. Do not mistake this as physically limiting or particularly restful. When you’re doing real restoration work, it’s transformative, you’ll need support and tools to shift your perspective and change your frame of reference.

There are few tools that are as versatile and useful as a chair. It as an objective partner than can be utilized in many ways to lift and support us, while giving us different angles to play with, receive and perceive information from.  When we see things from different perspectives and angles, we begin to realize that our ways of habitually doing and thinking are one small piece of our bigger picture.

In this training we will look at the different ways we can use chairs: in a home and/or restorative practice, as well as in a group setting. We will explore its application in warrior poses, inversions, restorative, pranayama and more. Come explore this magical tool of perspective and support and learn new recipes to re-imagine and re-invigorate your practice.

Aligning Your Adjustments

Sun April 14 | 2-5p | $60

Gain clarity and confidence in your teaching with hands on tools and techniques. In this workshop we will explore a variety of asanas, and how we might embody them differently, depending on anatomical variety and habitual patterns of embodiment due to societal norms and expectations. We will use simple and sound techniques to use when and where it is appropriate to adjust/assist in a class room setting.
In this installment of the workshop, we will cover:

Tools for Observation: how we approach seeing when someone can benefit from an assist and when they cannot.

Bio-Mechanics and Joint Space: How to observe what the body is doing in specific asanas and where the movement is articulated from.

Techniques for using hands safely, appropriately, and effectively.

Open to all teachers and teachers in training.

In this workshop we will focus on the familiar patterns of movement often seen in flow classes, utilizing and increasing our knowledge of body mechanics and honing our observational skills. We will explore and create different ways to get into both classical and modern asanas through precise, accessible alignment, sensible language, and fluid movement. Festival Workshops: Introduction to the Theory & Practice of Katonah Yoga

Design ohne Titel-5.png

I’ll also be teaching workshops on Saturday and Sunday in the Karma Cologne Festival!

Join me and other amazing teachers like Sonia Taylor Bach, Ron Reid, Katchie Ananda, Jelena Lieberberg and more!

Katonah Yoga is a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 40 years. She and her teachers incorporate classical Hatha yoga with Taoist theory, geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination — in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being.Framing the practice, maps of time and personal space are defined and refined. Themes using asana as origami, manipulating form for function, and developing a sense of personal measure are incorporated in Katonah Yoga practices.

Katonah Yoga is organized around three principles of esoteric dialogue: all polarities are mediated by trinity; the universe has pattern, pattern belies intelligence; by virtue of repetition there is potential for insight.
Disciplined techniques are organized for revelation through revolutions.
